Art Begets Art

Ever heard the phrase, “Money begets money”?  It means that if you have money, you can make money.  One major instruction given by those who know HOW to make money to those who WANT to make money is to surround yourself with the trappings of money.

Likewise, when you want to make art, you should surround yourself with the trappings of art – art people, art books, art tools, and well…ART.  How do you know what is art?  I like this simple and to-the-point definition:

ART – The product or process of deliberately arranging symbolic elements in a way that affects the senses, emotions, and/or intellect.

I wanted to share with you some photos of a particular type of art that I love having in my studio.  It influences me in a wonderfully positive way.

Most of you who live around the Rankin County area in MS will immediately recognize the artwork on these pieces as that of the residents of The Mustard Seed, a special place for developmentally challenged adults.  This artwork definitely appeals to my senses and emotions.  It’s happy art, free and unencumbered, the way art should be.  It isn’t just a picture; it exudes the personality of the artist.  You can FEEL the happiness in it.

I love this artwork so much that I talked Danny out of his blue cup given to him by our son’s family.  It says, “I Love Grandpa” and I am not a Grandpa, but I couldn’t have that one little cup sitting by it’s lonesome, upstairs in the cabinet, when it could be brought into my studio and loved and used with the other pieces.  It just wouldn’t be right.

I hope that you will surround yourself with the things you love, the things that bring happiness into your life.  Take those pretty dishes and wonderful linens out of hiding and use them.  Take down those made-with-love quilts and dream sweet dreams under them from time to time.

Art should be used and loved and cared for.  Art begets art; beauty begets beauty; love begets love.
